What is Somatic Bodywork?

Somatic

A somatic practice is one where the goal is to engage in the practice in a way that maintains or increases an awareness of one's body. Even if you're not aware of them, each of our feelings and experiences has an associated body sensation connected to it. When we build or practice an awareness of how our body is experiencing our reality, it empowers us to have a relationship to our human organism. Somatic practices are really big news in the mental health world for the way they can be relieving to symptoms of trauma, and have been practiced by native cultures for centuries. A somatic practice differs from just doing something in that the goal is to be attuned to one's body, as opposed to completing a task or engaging with the world around one's self

Bodywork

An umbrella term referring to trained touch for the purpose of causing a therapeutic intervention to the body's patterns that perpetuate things like stress, misalignment, and pain. Massage, reiki, chiropractic adjustment, and acupuncture are all examples of bodywork. So, Somatic bodywork is trained touch for the purpose of connecting the recipient with their body. In my work, that is usually to aid my clients in processing trauma or difficult emotion
